Family Sponsorship

Family sponsorship is a category of immigration available to the family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

Family members eligible to sponsor include:

  •   Spouse or common-law/conjugal partner
  •   Dependent child (adopted or biological)
  •   Parents and grandparents

In some circumstances, you may be eligible to sponsor other family members outside the above-mentioned categories. If you have no other eligible relatives to sponsor you may sponsor the following family members:

  •   Orphaned brother or sister
  •   Orphaned nephew or niece
  •   Orphaned grandchild

Who qualifies to be a Sponsor?

To be a sponsor, one needs to:

  •   be at least 18 years of age
  •   be a Canadian citizen, registered Indian or a permanent resident of Canada
  •   be living in Canada unless you are a Canadian citizen who lives abroad and plan to return to Canada when your relatives immigrate
  •   sign an undertaking promising to provide for the basic requirements of sponsored person
  •   meet the LICO except in case when you are sponsoring your Spouse/ Common-Law Partner/Conjugal partner with no dependant child or with dependant child who has no dependant child.

Who is restricted to be a Sponsor?

You may not be able to sponsor if you any of the following applies to you:

  •   Receiving social assistance for reasons other than disability
  •   In default of any undertaking, immigration loan or debt, performance bond, support payment obligations.
  •   Undischarged bankrupt
  •   Subject to removal order
  •   Convicted of a violent crime, an offence of sexual nature or resulting in bodily harm to a relative; or an attempt or threat to commit it.
  •   In prison
  •   Did not include the relative to sponsor in your own PR application
  •   Previously sponsored a Spouse/ Common-law partner/ conjugal partner who became a PR less than 3 years ago
  •   Was previously sponsored as spouse/common-law partner/conjugal partner and became PR less than 5 years ago.

Government Fees

Sponsorship fee : CAN $1050 [For spousal/Parent or grandparent/relative(22 years or older)]

Sponsorship fee : CAN $150 [ Dependent Child]

Sponsorship fee : CAN $ 650 [relatives under 22 years of age]
